Control Description
Upon the release of a new standard cost estimate, the system automatically revalues existing on-hand inventory across all inventory categories (Raw Materials, WIP, Semi-Finished Goods, Finished Goods, and Transit) and records the resulting inventory revaluation adjustment to the designated balance sheet and gain/loss accounts.
Risk
Errors in the release or calculation of new standard costs may result in a material misstatement of inventory valuation and financial results due to improper inventory revaluation
Implementation Details
SAP S/4HANA Standard Cost Revaluation Mechanism
• The automated inventory revaluation process relies on Controlling (CO-PC) and the Material Ledger (ML) framework:
1. Core Transaction Codes & Fiori Apps
• CK11N / CK40N: Create individual or mass multi-level standard cost estimates (Costing Runs).
• CK24 / Fiori App (Release Material Cost Estimates): Execute the Marking and Releasing phases.
• CKME: Execute price releases independently of period start dates under Material Ledger environments.
2. The Two-Step Execution Mechanism
• SAP separates cost updates into two distinct phases to ensure review control prior to financial impact:
◘ Marking: Updates the Future Price field in the material master (MBEW / ML tables). Financial Impact: None (acts as a staging and review phase).
◘ Releasing: Promotes the future price to the active Standard Price. Financial Impact: Automatically calculates the revaluation variance ({Quantity on Hand X Change in Standard Price) for on-hand stock and posts simultaneously to the Universal Journal (ACDOCA).
3. Automated G/L Postings (OBYC Configuration)
Upon release, SAP triggers automatic account determination:
• Inventory Balance Sheet Accounts (BSX): Automatically debits or credits Raw Materials, WIP, or Finished Goods to match the new valuation.
• Gain / Loss Accounts (PRD / UMB): Posts offsetting price variances directly to income statement revaluation accounts
4. Special Inventory Categories (WIP & Transit)WIP:
• Revalued dynamically through subsequent production order variance calculations and periodic settlement runs.
• Transit Stock: Automatically inherits the updated standard price structure upon cost activation for consistent cross-plant or company-code transfers.
Test Procedures
Test Procedures
A) Test of Design (ToD)
• Inspect Automatic Account Determination for Inventory (BSX)
• Navigate to transaction OBYC (Automatic Account Determination).
• Filter for:
◘ Chart of Accounts (COA) used by the organization.
◘ Transaction key BSX (Inventory Posting).
◘ Relevant material valuation classes (Raw Materials, Semi-Finished Goods, Finished Goods).
• Confirm that valid balance sheet inventory accounts are mapped for each combination.
◘ Inspect Price Difference and Revaluation Account Mapping (PRD / UMB)
In OBYC, filter for:
◘ Same Chart of Accounts (COA).
◘ Transaction keys PRD (Price Differences) and UMB (Gain/Loss from Revaluation).
◘ Valuation classes for inventory categories.
• Confirm that appropriate P&L variance or revaluation gain/loss accounts are mapped to capture standard cost adjustment differences.
Test of Operating Effectiveness
• Navigate via CK24 to the Accounting Document:
• In transaction CK24, open the results log for the successfully executed and released costing run period.
• Look for the "Accounting Document Generated" status or message indicator (Message Class CK, Number 718: "Price change documents and financial documents created").
• Double-click the message or click the Financial Document icon to jump directly to the generated FI document (FB03). Alternatively, navigate directly to transaction FB03 (Display Document) and enter the company code, document number, and fiscal year extracted from the CK24 execution log.
• Inspect the Financial Document Header and Line Items:
• In FB03, review the document header to ensure it corresponds to the period-end price change/revaluation date (typically the first day of the fiscal period).
• Review the line-item grid to identify the postings generated by the revaluation. You will see multiple line items grouped by material or valuation class:
◘ Inventory Accounts (BSX): Line items debiting or crediting balance sheet inventory accounts (Raw Materials, Semi-Finished Goods, Finished Goods) for each material/valuation class.
◘ Price Difference / Revaluation Accounts (PRD / UMB): Offsetting line items posting to price variance or inventory revaluation gain/loss accounts.
